Implications of Big Data for Individuals
Personalized Services
Big data allows companies and organizations to customize services and experiences according to individual users. It is accomplished by collecting and analyzing huge amounts of data such as browsing activity, purchase history, social media engagement, and location. For instance, streaming services like Netflix utilize data to customize shows and films according to a user's viewing history. Online retailers like Amazon suggest products on the basis of what a customer has bought and searched for in the past. In the healthcare industry, big data makes personalized medicine possible, with the approach to treatment being customized based on the individual's genetic data, medical history, and lifestyle.
The benefits of this personalization are not hard to see: it saves time, increases satisfaction, and even improves quality of life. For example, fitness and health apps track activity and construct individualized workout routines. However, personalization facilitated through big data also brings nuance issues. Individuals can get trapped in "filter bubbles," where they are only exposed to like information, hindering exposure to new ideas or creative thinking.
Briefly, personalized services based on big data significantly improve user convenience and experience at the expense of autonomy, algorithm dependence, and exposure to curated realities. They are far more relevant and effective for users, but they must understand how their data are used to create the digital environments that they increasingly spend their lives in.
