The past history of technology and the increased level of information digitisation form the foundation of the development of big data. Data storage and gathering depended on the capacity of available technologies in the past. The 20th century was historic with the development of data warehouses and databases, which enabled the storage and handling of structured data by organisations in an efficient way. But the "big data" term became mainstream in the early 2000s when the internet, social media, and mobile phones exploded, generating massive volumes of unstructured data.
